Many thought the debut of the Panamera in 2009 was Porsche's answer to a question nobody asked. In reality, however, it was the actualization of an idea that was conceived more than two decades earlier.

Porsche had its eye on the large luxury sedan market in the mid-80's and looked to its successful 928 coupe as a platform to expand its narrow product line. Unfortunately for the company, sales of the 928 tanked in the late 80's and early 90's leading to the model being discontinued and any plans for a 4 door version of it being scrapped.

In many ways then, it was a stroke of luck that the original plans fell through, as Porsche had to go back to the drawing board to design a purpose-built large 4 door sedan from scratch, creating an all-new platform in the process. And what a platform it is.

The Panamera has roughly the same exterior dimensions as a Mercedes S Class, and yet the driving characteristics are closer to 911 territory than any plush luxo-cruiser. It hunkers down at speed, expresses a surprising level of agility through corners, and thanks to its remarkable seven speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox, shifts faster than anything else in its class. Porsche offered 3 different engines and optional all-wheel-drive on the Panamera, this particular vehicle comes with the 400 horsepower 4.8L V8 along with full-time AWD resulting in a powerful and planted driving feel that offers loads of traction in almost any weather condition.

What is the true beauty of a Panamera? It's more than skin deep, and requires that you get behind the wheel to truly experience the driving dynamics that are possible from a full-size sedan. Imagine that next trip to Whistler, driving up the Sea-To-Sky highway winding through the mountains, experiencing one of the most beautiful drives in the world in a high-performance
sports car; then realizing you are doing all this with room for 4 people and all their luggage in total comfort.
