The 190 SL was produced by Mercedes-Benz between May 1955 and February 1963. Internally
referred to as W121 (BII or B2), it was first shown in prototype at the 1954 New York Auto Show,
and was viewed as an affordable yet still luxurious and well-engineered sports car to fit in the line-up
below the much more expensive 300 SL. The major difference other than the engine was the 190
was built on a shortened monocoque platform modified from a small Mercedes Sedan rather than
the intricate tubular space frame of the 300 SL.

Mercedes decided to produce a competition-client version of the model. The lightweight version had
modified doors with no windows, the windscreen was replaced with a small racing aeroscreen and
the bumpers and roof were removed. The manufacturer built seven or eight examples (exact number
unknown), to have it homologated in the GT category but did it with its standard windscreen and
hood. With lightweight version it was classified in the " sports series " category where it proved to be
less than competitive. The factory abandoned the 190 SLR project and little, if anything is known of
the fate of the cars produced other than two of them that were purchased and competed in Hong
Kong and Macau. The factory did continue to offer the 190 SLR kits, doors etc. to owners who
wished to race their 190 SLs

This particular vehicle began its life as a late model 1963 version in California. Imported by the
current owner in 2004, it has been meticulously reengineered with the correct competition doors and
aeroscreen. The bumpers and roof were removed and alloy wheels fitted. All the original body parts
and mechanical equipment has been retained if the next owner wishes to return it to stock

The original, matching numbers engine has been stripped and rebuilt. A more sporting camshaft was
fitted along with Weber DCOE 40 carburetors to replace the original Solex units and an electronic
ignition installed for reliability. A more sporting exhaust has also been fitted to give both enhanced
performance and produce the appropriate aura as it drives by. The transmission has also gone
through a rebuild. All other components including brakes, suspension and electrical have been
refurbished as needed. The car was then repainted in the correct Mercedes silver and the interior
has been refinished with new carpets and new seats installed.
A truly unique vehicle, can be made eligible for vintage racing or street licensed as it is now. All the
invoices for the modifications and the Canadian service history are available.
