Ah the SUV. A phenomenon started in the late 1980s and now what pretty much every second person drives. Short for Sports Utility Vehicle to those held in Guantanamo Bay the past 30 years, manufacturers have applied this acronym to almost every small, tall, hatchback like vehicle that they produce. Though the first word, sport, always seems to fall short. You would think something labeled sport would be, well you know, sporty. There are a few that live up to this word, but there is only one that has the badge that you aspired to as a child. This is the 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Hold on tight.

Powered by a Twin Turbocharged 4.8 Liter aluminum block V8, power is at 500 Hp and 516 ft lbs of torque. Now this makes a difference when the pedal to the right is pressed to the floor. In only a millisecond of notice, a mixture of fuel, high pressure air and electricity combine in one massive explosion, not once, but eight times right in front of your unknowing knees. This tour de force converts one form a violence to another when this energy is sent to all four wheels at once thanks to the lightning quick 8 speed Tiptronic transmission. 0-60 comes up in 4 seconds flat. The quarter mile? Blitz at 12.4 Seconds at 113 Mph. Top speed? 172 Mph. These are numbers that would be impressive in most coupes, let alone a high riding off road machine.

That's right. Not only is the word Sport done justice in this Cayenne, but Utility is at the command of your fingertips. Pull one of the center console mounted toggles, and watch as the entire vehicle raises toward the sky, allowing your vehicle to drive right over the debris of your neighbors home after a Tsunami hits. Then when you inevitably have something to load into the expandable cargo area, the same switch allows the entire vehicle to be dropped right to the ground, giving you convenience even in the most frugal times of uncertainty. With wading depth allowing the fording of 27 inches of water with suspension fully raised, the feeling of being trapped by rising flood waters is all but gone, with relaxation setting in, no matter how loud the screams of the less fortunate surrounding you become.

The 2011 Cayenne Turbo is an SUV. It has the body of an SUV, the ride height, the practicality. But where it differs, is the way it fills in the check boxes. Where the rest of the pack fall, the Cayenne picks up to lead. You want to go 172 Mph after coming down a jagged mountain? Be our guest. There are many vehicles out there from around the world that title themselves as being Sport and Utility, but only till now, have the Germans truly perfected it. Slide on in 2019 Joel Goodson.
