For years, it seemed that when buying a British automobile, what you paid for was four roughly round wheels, an engine that may or may not have been the one intended for the car, and a whole lot of charm. While this did go un-noticed by some, and a few cars were sold, it eventually led to the entire British Automobile Industry Collapsing at its knees. The world grew wise to the likes of Japanese and German competition, and the rest is history. But now, everything automotive and British is owned by a bigger company. Rolls Royce and Mini is part of BMW, Bentley is part of VW and Lotus is owned by the Chinese. Land Rover and Jaguar? First by Ford, and now the Indians, which is where our story picks up today. Take the British charm of a time long ago, a sleek body, and a few engineers from Ford to make it all, well let's be real, run, and what you end up with is the vehicle before you today. Slide down in, the 2008 Jaguar XKR is warm with welcome.
Starting with that engine. Being a Jaguar, you might think a very British Inline Six or at most, a wheezy Rover Leyland V8 would be fitted. Not today. What we have here, is Eight cylinders of Anglo European muscle, and as if that wasn't enough grunt, a Twin Screw Supercharger is the cherry place right on top. With a displacement of 4.2 liters, 420 Horsepower, and 414 ft lbs of Torque are sent to the rear wheels via a lightning quick six speed automatic. By automatic, I mean automatic. Old fashioned in a sense, a transmission with torque converter will always be less jerky than one with a single or dual clutch arrangement. 0- 60 comes up in 4.5 seconds, and the quarter mile passes at 12.9 seconds at 110.5 Mph. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 Mph.
Now, all that performance sounds very Jag like doesn't it? Indeed. Jaguar has always been good at straight line speed. Where this new breed of feline strafes, is in the handling department. Not only does this fast cat come with R tuned suspension, but with 255 and 285 section tires draped front and rear, corner carving comes at ease when the time is right. But the real secret to how this ocelot can pounce is in the body. Made almost entirely of aluminum, 200 pounds is shed off the previous generation of XK, while stiffness is up 30%. Throw in bigger 14-inch rotors and steel braided brake lines, and the past seems oh so long ago.
There may have been a time where buying a Jaguar was a gamble that few were willing to take. You just never could trust the Lucas electrics to cooperate with the AJ powerplant to get you home. But now, thanks to a few blue collar folk Ford and a tidying up of their assembly plant, you can make it not only home, but to the destination of your choice, in a land far far away, with luggage, and even a friend! So load those suitcases, set the heated seat, and do a puffy rolling burnout. The 2008 Jaguar XKR is here to show you, that the British are back, and they mean business this time.
